Swiss Motorway Vignette

Swiss Motorway Vignette

What it is, who needs it and where to buy it before you drive on Swiss motorways

Short Answer

The Swiss motorway vignette is an annual sticker or e-vignette required on any vehicle up to 3.5 tonnes using Swiss and Liechtenstein motorways and expressways. It is sold at border crossings, post offices, garages, some kiosks and online, and is valid from 1 December of the previous year until 31 January of the following year.

If you plan to use Switzerland's motorway network, whether for your daily commute, a weekend trip, or simply the drive from the airport to your new home, you will need a motorway vignette. Unlike toll systems in neighbouring countries that charge per kilometre or per section, Switzerland uses a single flat-rate annual charge that covers the whole network.

This guide explains who needs a vignette, where and how to buy one, the difference between the physical sticker and the newer electronic version, and what happens if you are caught without one. It is written for newcomers who are registering a vehicle, renting a car, or bringing one across the border for the first time.

Who needs a Swiss motorway vignette

Any motor vehicle or trailer with a total weight of up to 3.5 tonnes must carry a valid vignette to use Swiss motorways and expressways, identified by the green motorway signs. This applies equally to vehicles registered in Switzerland, cars brought in from abroad, and rental vehicles picked up in another country.

You do not need a vignette to drive on ordinary cantonal or municipal roads, only on the tagged motorway and expressway network. Heavier vehicles are subject to a separate distance-based charge rather than the vignette.

  • Foreign-registered vehicles driven into Switzerland, including relocation removal vans under 3.5 tonnes
  • Motorcycles
  • Rental cars, unless the rental company has already applied an e-vignette to the vehicle

Physical sticker or electronic vignette

Switzerland introduced an electronic vignette (e-vignette) alongside the traditional adhesive sticker. The e-vignette is linked to your vehicle's number plate rather than affixed to the windscreen, which removes the risk of a damaged or badly placed sticker being rejected at a control.

Both formats cover the same period and the same price, so the choice is mainly a matter of convenience. If you buy the e-vignette, keep your purchase confirmation, since enforcement relies on automatic number-plate recognition matched against the official register.

Where to buy a vignette

You can buy a sticker vignette at Swiss border crossings, post offices, many petrol stations and garages, some kiosks, and cantonal road traffic offices. If you are entering Switzerland by car for the first time, the border crossing is usually the most convenient point of purchase.

The e-vignette is sold through the official federal online portal and increasingly through the same physical outlets that sell the sticker. Buying online lets you register the vignette against your number plate in advance, which is useful if you are importing a car and want to be covered from the day you cross the border.

  • Border crossing points into Switzerland and Liechtenstein
  • Swiss Post offices
  • Petrol stations, garages and some kiosks near motorway access points
  • Cantonal road traffic licensing offices
  • The official e-vignette online portal

Applying the sticker correctly

The sticker must be affixed directly to the inside of the windscreen, in the area reserved for it, before you drive on a motorway. It cannot be transferred between vehicles once applied, since removing it typically destroys the security markings that make it valid.

Sorting out a vignette alongside vehicle import paperwork, insurance and registration can feel like one more item on an already long relocation checklist. Cost and validity period

The vignette is sold as a single flat price covering unlimited use of the motorway network for its full validity period, regardless of how many times you cross the border or how far you drive. Because the exact price is adjusted periodically by the federal authorities, always check the current amount on the official vignette portal or at the point of sale before you buy.

The validity window runs from 1 December of the year before to 31 January of the year after the sticker's printed year, which gives you a two-month overlap to buy the following year's vignette without a gap in coverage.

Driving without a valid vignette

Driving on a Swiss motorway without a valid vignette, or with a sticker that has been damaged, misapplied or is for the wrong year, exposes you to an on-the-spot fine in addition to having to buy a valid vignette immediately. Enforcement for the e-vignette relies on automatic number-plate checks, so an unregistered plate is treated the same way as a missing sticker.

If you are renting or borrowing a vehicle, confirm with the owner or rental company that a valid vignette is already in place rather than assuming it is included.

A sticker that looks intact but was removed and reapplied from another windscreen is often void, since the adhesive backing is designed to tear on removal. If in doubt, buy a new one rather than risk a fine.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a vignette to drive from Zurich Airport to my new home?
Only if your route uses a tagged motorway or expressway, which is common for longer transfers between cities. Check your planned route in advance and buy a vignette at the airport, a nearby petrol station, or online before you set off, since some airport approach roads already require one.
Is the vignette required for electric vehicles?
Yes. The vignette requirement applies to all motor vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes using Swiss motorways, regardless of the type of engine or fuel. Electric and hybrid vehicles are not currently exempt.
Can I buy a Swiss vignette for just a few days?
No. Switzerland only sells an annual vignette, valid from 1 December of the previous year to 31 January of the following year, with no short-term or daily option. This differs from toll systems in some neighbouring countries that offer weekly or monthly passes.
Does a rental car already have a vignette?
Many Swiss rental companies apply an e-vignette to their fleet, but this is not guaranteed, especially for cars picked up outside Switzerland. Always ask the rental company directly and check your contract before driving onto a motorway.
What happens if my vignette sticker is damaged when I remove my old car's windscreen sticker?
A sticker that tears or loses its printed markings during removal is generally considered invalid, since the design is meant to prevent reuse. If this happens, you will need to buy a replacement rather than attempt to reapply the damaged one.
