Eaux-Vives and Champel
Les Eaux-Vives, in full transformation thanks to the new lakeside park, offers a lively neighborhood life in the immediate vicinity of the center. Champel, more residential and quiet, is popular with families for its green spaces and its proximity to the University Hospitals of Geneva (HUG). Nations and Grand-Saconnex

Carouge
Nicknamed the “Geneva Greenwich Village”, Carouge is a town in its own right with its village atmosphere, its shaded squares, its art galleries and its restaurants. Prices are slightly more accessible there than in the center of Geneva. Rent: CHF 2,200 to CHF 3,200 for a 3-4 room apartment.
Cologny and Vandoeuvres
On the heights of the left bank, these residential communities offer villas with spectacular views of the lake and Mont-Blanc. It is the most exclusive district of Geneva, popular with senior executives and wealthy individuals. Rents and purchase prices among the highest in Switzerland.
Cost of living in Geneva
Geneva regularly ranks in the top 10 most expensive cities in the world. The median salary in the canton is around CHF 7,600 gross per month. Since 2020, the canton has applied a minimum wage of CHF 24.32 per hour, or approximately CHF 4,400 gross per month.

Transport and connections in Geneva
The TPG (Transports Publics Genevois) network includes trams, buses and trolleybuses covering the entire canton. The Léman Express project, commissioned in 2019, connects Geneva to neighboring France (Annemasse, Annecy, Evian) by a regional train network. The extension of the tram to Saint-Julien-en-Genevois strengthens cross-border connections.
Geneva International Airport (GVA) is just 6 minutes by train from the city center, making it one of the best connected airports in Europe. It serves more than 150 destinations. The TGV Lyria connects Geneva to Paris in 3h05.
Geneva's particularity is the cross-border dimension: more than 100,000 cross-border workers cross the border every day to work in Geneva. Roads are very congested during rush hours, which makes public transport all the more relevant.
Living in Geneva or in neighboring France
Many expatriates wonder about the advisability of residing in neighboring France (Annemasse, Ferney-Voltaire, Divonne-les-Bains, Saint-Julien-en-Genevois) rather than in Geneva itself. Rents there are 30 to 50% lower, but several factors merit consideration.
Cross-border status implies specific taxation: workers residing in France and working in Geneva are taxed at source in Switzerland (bilateral tax agreement). Travel times can be considerable during rush hours (45 to 90 minutes for 15 km). Access to Swiss services (health insurance, banking, schools) also differs.
Our recommendation: if your budget allows it, residing on the Geneva side considerably simplifies administrative procedures and improves your quality of daily life. If the budget is restrictive, the French municipalities served by the Léman Express offer the best compromise.
