Leaving Switzerland: support at departure
Leave with peace of mind. We manage all terminations and departure formalities.
Leaving Switzerland involves as many steps as arriving, if not more. Termination of the lease (with the official dates to be respected), end of lease cleaning to Swiss standards, exit inventory, cancellation of insurance and subscriptions, deregistration from the municipality, declaration of departure for taxes... each step has its own rules and deadlines.
Forgetting a step can have financial consequences (maintenance of a lease, insurance premiums due, municipal taxes). We plan your departure from A to Z to avoid any unpleasant surprises.
Planning your departure from Switzerland: timetable and procedures
Leaving Switzerland involves a series of administrative, contractual and logistical procedures which must be planned several months in advance. A well-organized departure will save you from financial and administrative complications, particularly in terms of lease termination, taxes and welfare.
We recommend starting the process at least 3 to 4 months before the planned departure date. Certain obligations, such as termination of the lease, require strict notice periods which vary depending on the contract and the canton.
| Delay before departure | Approach |
|---|---|
| 4 months | Termination of the lease (check the termination date and notice) |
| 3 months | Termination of insurance (health, household, civil liability, vehicle) |
| 3 months | Inform the employer (according to the employment contract) |
| 2 months | Organiser le international moving (demande de devis) |
| 1 month | Termination of subscriptions (telecom, electricity, transport) |
| 2 weeks | Announcement of departure to Resident Control |
| 1 week | Mail forwarding (Swiss Post) |
| Day of departure | Return of keys, exit property inventory |
Lease termination and end-of-lease cleaning
Termination of a lease in Switzerland is governed by strict rules. The notice period is generally 3 months (sometimes 6 months for commercial leases or certain contracts), and termination can only take effect on the dates provided for in the lease contract (often March 31, June 30 or September 30).
End of lease cleaning (refurbishment) is an essential Swiss specificity. The apartment must be returned in an impeccable state of cleanliness, in accordance with the standards of the management or the owner. It is strongly recommended to use a professional cleaning company specialized at the end of the lease.
| Cleaning service | Estimated cost | Included |
|---|---|---|
| Studio / 2 rooms | CHF 500 – 800 | Complete cleaning, kitchen, bathroom |
| 3-4 pieces | CHF 800 – 1,400 | Same + bedroom(s), cupboards, balcony |
| 5+ pieces | CHF 1,200 – 2,000 | Same + additional parts |
| Return guarantee | Included or CHF 100 – 200 | Free redo if rejected by the agency |
Finding a lease taker
If you have to leave your apartment outside the contractual termination dates, you can offer a lease taker (lease assignment). The buyer must be solvent and acceptable to the lessor. Swiss law requires that you propose at least one solvent and acceptable candidate: if the lessor refuses without legitimate reason, you are released from your obligations from the proposed takeover date.
Taxes and pension: your obligations upon departure
Leaving Switzerland has significant tax consequences. If you are taxed at source, tax is withheld until your last day of work. If you complete a regular tax return, you will need to make an interim declaration for the period from January 1 to the date of your departure.
Concerning your professional pension (2nd pillar / LPP), you can transfer your assets to a vested benefits account or, under certain conditions, request a capital payment. The rules differ depending on whether you are going to an EU/EFTA country or a third country.
- • Mandatory interim tax declaration for the year of departure
- • Reimbursement of overpaid withholding tax within 2-3 months
- • 2nd pillar: transfer to a vested benefits account (if departure to the EU for the obligatory portion)
- • 2nd pillar: capital withdrawal possible if departing outside EU/EFTA (after effective departure)
- • 3rd pillar (pillar 3a): withdrawal possible at the time of permanent departure from Switzerland
- • Withholding tax of 5% (federal) + cantonal rate on retirement capital withdrawals
The 2nd pillar in detail
If you leave Switzerland for an EU/EFTA country, the mandatory part of your 2nd pillar must be transferred to a vested benefits account. Only the non-mandatory part can be withdrawn as capital. If you leave for a country outside the EU/EFTA, the entire 2nd pillar can be withdrawn as capital, subject to withholding tax. Cantons with favorable taxes for capital withdrawals (Schwyz, Zug, Appenzell) are often used to domicile vested benefits accounts.
Termination of contracts and subscriptions
Before leaving Switzerland, you must cancel all of your contracts and subscriptions. Each service provider has its own termination conditions and notice period. Here is a summary of the main contracts to be terminated.
| CONTRACT | Notice | How to cancel |
|---|---|---|
| Health insurance (LAMal) | End of month + 1 month | Registered letter + departure certificate |
| Household insurance / liability | 30 days – 3 months | Registered letter |
| Mobile subscription | 30 – 60 days | Online or by mail |
| Internet/TV | 30 – 60 days | Online or by mail |
| CFF subscription (AG/half-fare) | End of month | At the CFF counter or online |
| Electricity/gas | Departure date | Online form, final statement |
