Lugano, Switzerland under the Mediterranean sun

Lugano, with its 63,000 inhabitants and a conurbation of 150,000 people, is the largest city in the canton of Ticino, the Italian-speaking region of Switzerland. With more than 2,300 hours of sunshine per year, a lake with turquoise waters and palm trees lining the promenades, Lugano offers a unique art of living in Switzerland, combining Swiss efficiency with Mediterranean gentleness.

A historic financial center, Lugano is the third banking center in Switzerland after Zurich and Geneva. The city is home to many private banks, wealth management companies and family offices. The crypto-asset trading sector is also developing there, benefiting from a favorable regulatory environment and attractive living environment.

The proximity to Italy (15 minutes from Como, 1h15 from Milan) adds an international dimension. Many expats enjoy the opportunity to enjoy Italian food, shopping and culture while residing in Switzerland.

Districts of Lugano and surrounding areas

The Ticino rental market is significantly more relaxed than in the rest of Switzerland. Rents are 30 to 40% lower than Zurich, offering excellent value for money.

Centro and Cassarate

Lugano city center is compact and pedestrianized, with Via Nassa (main shopping street), the lakeside Parco Ciani and the LAC (Lugano Arte e Cultura). Cassarate, to the north-east, offers a quiet residential setting. Rent: CHF 1,500 to CHF 2,300 for a 3.5 room apartment.

Paradise

A town south of Lugano, Paradiso lives up to its name: panoramic views of the lake, access to Monte San Salvatore by funicular and an upscale residential atmosphere. Rent: CHF 1,600 to CHF 2,500.

Massagno and Savosa

Residential communities on the heights of Lugano, offering more affordable rents and a green setting. Well connected by bus to the city center. Rent: CHF 1,300 to CHF 1,900 for a 3.5 room apartment.

Collina d'Oro and Montagnola

On the western hill overlooking the lake, these exclusive residential localities offer villas with spectacular views. Hermann Hesse lived there for over 40 years. Setting popular with wealthy families.

Transport and connections from Lugano

Lugano is connected to the rest of Switzerland by the Gotthard Base Tunnel (opened in 2016), which reduced the journey to Zurich to 2 hours by direct train. SBB trains run hourly to Zurich, Bern and Basel. The connection to Milan is provided in 1h15 by EC (EuroCity) trains.

The TPL (Trasporti Pubblici Luganesi) bus network serves the city and surrounding communities. A funicular connects the station to the city center (significant difference in altitude). Lake Lugano is also served by liner boats (Società Navigazione del Lago di Lugano).

Lugano-Agno Airport (LUG) has very limited connections. Milan Malpensa (MXP) is the closest international airport, reachable in 1 hour 15 minutes by car or shuttle. Zurich airport is 2 hours away by train.

Ticino art of living and integration

Living in Lugano means adopting a Mediterranean rhythm of life: espresso at the bar in the morning, grotto (typical Ticino restaurant) at lunchtime, passeggiata by the lake in the evening. Gastronomy is a pillar of local culture, mixing Swiss and Italian traditions. Weekly markets offer fresh local and Italian produce.

Italian is the everyday language and learning it is highly recommended. English is less widespread than in Zurich or Geneva, except in financial circles. The international community is smaller but warm. TASIS (The American School in Switzerland) in Montagnola is one of the oldest international schools in Switzerland.

Ticino offers exceptional outdoor activities: swimming in the lake from May to October, hiking in the Ticino valleys, skiing in Airolo (30 min) and golf in a heavenly setting. The Locarno film festival and JazzAscona enrich the regional cultural scene.
