Public schools in Switzerland

Public schools in Switzerland

A quality education system, free and compulsory for all residents.

The Swiss public school system is decentralized: each canton determines its own programs, methods and timetables. Education is free and compulsory from ages 4 to 15. The language of instruction corresponds to the official language of the canton (French, German or Italian). For expatriate children, reception classes facilitate linguistic integration.

Preguntas frecuentes

Is public school truly free in Switzerland?
Yes, public compulsory school is completely free, including basic supplies. Only certain optional services (canteen, extracurriculars, school trips) may generate fees, which are generally modest and sometimes subsidized depending on income.
How does the integration of a non-French-speaking child work?
The French-speaking cantons offer reception classes (CLACC) or intensive French courses for allophone students. In German-speaking Switzerland, similar systems exist for German. Children under 10 usually adapt within a few months. Teenagers may need 6 months to a year.
Can I choose which public school my child attends?
No, in principle each child is assigned to their local school. Exceptions are possible in certain cantons for justified reasons (proximity to the workplace, siblings in another school, specific bilingual program). We will help you formulate the request if necessary.
