Extend your stay or change your place of residence in Switzerland: the steps you need to know.

The renewal of your residence permit must be anticipated several weeks before its expiration. The procedure varies depending on the type of permit and the canton. A change of canton involves a file transfer between two administrations and can sometimes be complex, especially for license holders from outside the EU.

Pasos y plazos

Checking the due date

We identify the expiry date of your license and the cantonal deadlines for submitting the renewal application (generally 2 to 3 months before).

File Preparation

We gather the necessary documents: employment certificate, proof of address, health insurance, possibly extract from prosecution.

Deposit and tracking

The request is submitted to the competent cantonal service. In the event of a change of canton, we coordinate the two administrations.

Reception of the new title

You receive your new biometric license. In the event of an intercantonal move, you must register in your new municipality within 14 days.

When should you apply for renewal of your license?

It is recommended to submit the application 2 to 3 months before the expiration date. Some cantons send an automatic reminder, others do not. After the expiration date, your stay may be considered irregular, even if the request is being processed.

Can I move freely to another canton?

EU/EFTA B or C permit holders can move freely to another canton. For non-EU holders of a B permit, changing canton requires the agreement of the new canton, which has a limited quota. The C license authorizes total mobility.

How to move from a B license to a C license?

The C permit is granted after a regular and uninterrupted stay of 5 years (for EU/EFTA citizens of certain countries) or 10 years (for others). Integration criteria apply: linguistic knowledge, absence of prosecution, social integration. Some bilateral agreements reduce the period to 5 years.

What happens if my employment contract changes during the permit period?

A change of employer must be declared to the authorities. For EU/EFTA holders, this is a simple announcement. For holders outside the EU, a new license may be necessary. Loss of employment does not automatically result in license withdrawal, but may affect renewal.
