  • Sign your employment contract and initiate the permit application
  • Search for temporary housing for the first weeks
  • Obtain apostilled or legalized documents as needed
  • Start researching schools if you have children
  • Request a criminal record extract from your home country
  • Review your current insurance policies and their portability

1 to 3 months before arrival

  • Confirm your temporary or permanent housing
  • Organize your international move (quotes, sorting, packing)
  • Prepare the customs clearance file for your personal belongings
  • Check your pets' vaccinations and prepare the European passport
  • Cancel contracts in your home country (lease, insurance, telecom)
  • Gather all documents needed for municipal registration

The first week

  • Register at the residents' office of your municipality (deadline: 14 days)
  • Collect your proof of residence
  • Open a Swiss bank account
  • Subscribe to LAMal health insurance (deadline: 3 months retroactive)
  • Get a Swiss mobile plan
  • Complete residence permit procedures if not yet received

  • Subscribe to household and personal liability insurance
  • Enroll your children in school or daycare
  • Exchange your foreign driving license (deadline: 12 months)
  • Register your vehicle if applicable
  • Order a public transport pass (half-fare or GA travelcard)
  • Register for the radio-TV fee (Serafe)

  • Find permanent housing if you are in temporary accommodation
  • Compare and optimize your health insurance (deductible, supplementary)
  • Set up a pillar 3a (private pension) if relevant
  • Understand your payslip and the withholding tax system
  • Join associations or expat groups to facilitate integration
